"For many decades there has been a type of computer programs which, since its moment of birth, has been considered peculiar and exciting for some, and strange and inexplicable for others: the text-based adventure game." - Róbert Olessák

The Galleon

One of the largest, longest, most difficult text-based adventure game!

A text-based adventure game by Róbert Olessák, with its English version being released now and its Hungarian version being re-released for the game's 30th anniversary. Originally, it was made for the Commodore 64 (1991-1993), The Galleon (A Gálya) is a beloved and historic piece of Hungarian game development.

Step into the shoes of Tongrak the barbarian and Raernon the mage in this non-linear, sometimes unpredictable, but most certainly absurd, satirical and surreal fantasy adventure, as they traverse through the island of Athar following your written instructions. First, you have to free Raernon with Tongrak, then save the island of Athar from the impending war. For the latter, you have to collect the Crystals of the Rainbow (at least 5 out of the 6) and restart Tubifex, the last long-distance ship in the kingdom, which is inconveniently also missing.

The game consists of 250 scenes, nearly 100 creatures and 140 usable objects. You can (and in many cases have to) change characters over the course of the game between the two brothers, as oftentimes their different skills are required to solve a puzzle. The story incorporates different, colorful scenery, creatures and styles: you can find yourself in labyrinths, castles, dungeons, filled with trolls, demons and wizards.

How to play...

Press F1-F3 to turn the graphics on-off.
Press F5-F7 to change between Tongrak and Raernon (or write their name in the command prompt).
Press ARROW LEFT to call back the last command; and this command can be edited, rephrased.
Write DIR or $ in the command prompt to list all saved game states.

The game has a command interpreter that tries to process anything the player writes in the command line. Of course, the words and simple sentences should fit the scenery, so
"Build a rocket ship" will not do anything, but
"Follow" can follow a moving creature, or
"Take the key out of the bag and unlock the door" will do all that, or even
"Go to the castle" will take you to the castle, if you have already visited that place (though you also should take into account the living world of The Galleon: doors could be closed, places darkened, or some new danger could obstruct the way there).
If you have a door in front of you, and you write:
"Open"
The game will ask you "What do you want to open?"
In this case, it's enough if you answer the question:
"The door".
